Spoon and fork rings are known to have originated in England during the 17th century and were used as alternative wedding bands. Servants who could not afford precious metals resorted to stealing silverware from their employers and crafted them into wedding rings. Those caught were prosecuted for theft, and transported to become early settlers in Australia.
As a silversmith I have spent time learning the traditional skills involved in working with silver and other materials to create work that explores and celebrates the ideas of traditional craft. While studying at the Royal College of Art I was able to develop my design ideas and learn about new technologies which I combine to design and make silverware.
My work focuses on merging traditional silversmithing techniques with digital technology. While studying at the Royal College of Art I developed a user interface in the form of a hammer that works alongside computer aided design (CAD) software to mimic the physical actions of silversmithing, in particular the hammering process used in forming sheet metal. The faceted silverware and jewellery is designed using CAD and realised using processes such as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling and press forming and rapid prototyping and casting.
The exhausted silverware collection is made using traditional hand techniques such as raising and forging. The pieces are designed based on the idea of function with a playful element as they take the form of the tableware they exhausted onto.

All proceeds to our chosen charity this year – Folly Wildlife Rescue.
Situated in the Broadwater Forest near Tunbridge Wells in Kent, Folly Wildlife Rescue Trust is a charity dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of injured, orphaned and distressed wild animals and birds throughout West Kent, East Sussex and the surrounding region.
Each year some 3500 injured, orphaned, sick or distressed wild animals and birds are admitted to our centre where they receive expert care and veterinary treatment. Some (but very few) have fallen from nests in high winds, or are the survivors of attack or predation by other wild animals, but by far, the vast majority are the victims of human activity.
We arrived at Jamie’s last night to enjoy one of their “soft opening” evenings.
The atmosphere was great, candles on the tables, music playing at the right volume – loud enough to hear but not too loud to have to shout at each other across the table.
The staff seemed excited, eager and a little apprehensive at the same time.
Not everything was available on the menu due to it being a soft launch; the specials, fish of the day and a couple of regular dishes.
We had a nice table for four in the front section, sadly away from the open kitchen where all the action was, but it was a good sized table with plenty of elbow room.
Drinks and the antipasti board were promptly brought as we took our time perusing the menu.
Two of us chose the baked chestnut mushrooms, one crispy squid and courgette, and one arancini risotto balls. Good sized portions and very tasty all round. We all had different main courses and we all agreed that they were all very good. Therefore we highly recommend the chicken in mushroom sauce on a crostini, prawn linguini, vegetable rotola, and my favourite the porcini fettuccini!
Only two of us managed dessert with the other two suddenly finding extra spoons to dig in and share as the chocolate arctic roll and sour cherry frangipan tart were too good to miss.
I am a fan of Italian food so I was quite confident that Jamie Oliver would deliver, I was not disappointed. It’s price point is not dissimilar to most of the Italians around town making it another great choice for somewhere to eat in town. We work right opposite which will make it very hard to go home at the end of every day knowing that there’s such a good restaurant just across the road.
Our many hearty congratulations to James and his team, we wish them every success. And we must also mention our charming waiter George who did a great job looking after us four ladies!
